Oh, dear.

I had an interesting conversation with someone this week. Here is the question I raised:

How would your parents react if you announced that God had called you into full-time vocational missions and you would be leaving for Zimbabwe (or some other developing, unstable nation)soon?

Readers who are parents, please tell us how you would honestly feel if your child told you they were leaving for Africa.

I have a feeling that honest answers would be surprising, interesting, and perhaps a bit difficult. Please comment! I really want to know what you think would happen.

So, actually I have had this discussion multiple times. (Well, maybe not the phone call part, but the presence of God's voice in my life, Yes.)

They have helped me by asking questions to get me to think through the role I would play and the steps I would have to take in preparation of the change. They are completely supportive by nature, knowing that God's character is one that can be trusted. He wants to use us in all the ways that he made us. If that means Malawi, then that is what that means.

In the end, they are amazing encouragers and want God's calling for my life to be something for which I myself have enthusiasm. It is strikingly uncomfortable in a sense because I can't use them as an excuse to not respond to Him.

Its kind of ironic that this is the question...because I actually had this conversation with my parents just the other week--not so much leaving anytime soon...but still. While my father tried to make the conversation playful by making jokes and such, I think my Mom was rather worried. I know she loves me and I know that she really wants me to live nearby and visit her everyday, and being in a country like Africa would be tough to visit often. But I know that deep down they would allow me to go especially if it is the will God has for my life. Since they, mainly my father, have been so mission focused throughout their life, I know they see the need for missionwork and spreading the good news. However, I do think that they are/would be a bit scared for me, my saftey, and my health.

I think my parents would ultimately be supportive and helpful. I think they would really struggle initially, worrying about me being unsafe and far away, but I think they would not try to stand in the way of a calling from God.
